Health Literacy and Cancer
What is health literacy?
Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others
Health literacy difficulties can have a huge effect on patients’ ability to prevent and cope with illnesses, including cancer.
Supporting good health literacy by working with cancer patients and the people who care for them will help to reduce inequalities in cancer rates, experiences, and outcomes
Health literacy and cancer
Low health literacy leads to:
• Increased risk of getting cancer
• Less chance of getting screened
• Late diagnosis.
• Difficulties in managing disease – for example, making treatment decisions, taking medication correctly, and managing side effects
• suffering severe distress
• Higher mortality rate from cancer
Patient empowerment
We want to empower people with confidence and skills to cope better with their cancer and avoid unnecessary physical and emotional difficulties.
We are trying to deliver clear, actionable information to the patients to help them understand their conditions, and make decisions about the treatment, and what it will do for them. Here at Rah e Aseman we Believe building a relationship where the person feels comfortable discussing their feelings reduces anxiety about unknown processes of treatment therefore, the level of anxiety and stress will be decreased. To achieve this goal, our strategies come into practice by
• preparing pamphlets, brochures, and electronic content
• encouraging people to take part in classes
• Provide screening sessions
• campaigns and even using different platforms in social media.
